Travis Stephens rose to the occasion his 2001 senior year at Tennessee, becoming the Vols' first All-America tailback since Johnny Majors in 1956. Stephens blasted for 1,464 yards his final year on The Hill in 2001, setting a school single-season record in leading Tennessee to an 11-2 mark and a No. 4 final ranking in both major polls. He also set the record for season attempts with 291 and tied the single-game record with 41 attempts against Arkansas. Stephens topped the 200-yard mark twice and collected more than 100 yards in five other games. He averaged 122 yards a game to lead the SEC, securing his place as a Doak Walker Award finalist.

- Carried the ball 12 times for 13 yards against Southern Miss in his first game back from his redshirt season the year before
- Leading rusher against Louisana-Monroe with 10 carries for 66 yards and two TDs
- Produced spectacular aerial acrobatics, diving over the goal line for touchdowns against Georgia, Memphis and Arkansas
- Carried the ball four times for 93 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run against Kentucky
