The inspirational leader of the 2005 SBC Cotton Bowl championship squad, Kevin Burnett made his final season as a Vol his best. He was elected team co-captain for the second consecutive year and was named a first-team All-America and All-SEC selection. He ranked second on the team with 120 tackles and third in the SEC with 9.2 tackles per game. He tied for the team lead for the team with seven special-teams tackles during the season. He had a fast start to the 2004 season with eight tackles and a fumble recovery in the win over UNLV. He was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after he set a new career-high with 16 tackles (10 solo) in a 30-28 win over Florida. He led the Vols with six tackles against Texas A&M in the 2005 SBC Cotton Bowl. He was a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection. He received his master's degree in sport management in the Fall of 2004.

2004 - RS-SENIOR
- Registered 120 tackles, good for second on the team, and six tackles for loss
- Earned All-America honors

- Named team co-captian (along with Michael Munoz), earning captain status for the second time in his career and becoming the Vols first two-time captain since J.G. Lowe in 1924-25 - Burnett shared the honor with Munoz

2003 - RS-JUNIOR
- Returned to action by playing in 13 games with 12 starts
- Named team captain alongside Michael Munoz, becoming the first juniors to be named captain since All-America guard Bob Dobelstein in 1944
- Finished the season fourth on the team in tackles with 90, while earning All-SEC second team honors from the league's coaches
- In his first game back from injury against Fresno State, he recorded six tackles, including a TFL on his first play
- Made eight stops against Florida
- Had two TFLs for the first time in his career against Marshall
- Posted seven tackles and a PBU vs. South Carolina
- Added eight stops and another TFL against Auburn
- A tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble highlight an eight-tackle performance at Alabama

- Redshirted the season after suffering a a knee injury in the season opener against Wyoming
2001 - SOPHOMORE
- Played in 12 games, making two starts
- Best outing came against Notre Dame when he registered 11 tackles, including eight solo stops
- Caused a fumble vs. the Irish that stopped a Notre Dame scoring drive - forced the fumble at the 1-yard line and a teammate fell on the ball to keep Notre Dame out of the endzone
- Earned first-career start against Memphis, responding with eight tackles
2000 - FRESHMAN
- Played in 11 games as a reserve safety early in the season, but saw most of his action on special teams
- Switched to linebacker midway through the season
- Jumped on an Alabama fumble in the fourth quarter that stopped a potential Crimson Tide scoring drive
- Totaled 11 tackles on the year to go with two sacks
