Men’s Tennis Central: ITA All-American Championships
October 01, 2021 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Eight members of the Tennessee men's tennis team are geared up to compete at the 2021 ITA All-American Championships, scheduled to run Oct. 2-10.
The Championships were canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Three Vols are set to begin play in the singles main draw and one Big Orange doubles pair will start the tournament in the doubles main draw.
Tennessee leads the nation with four ITA All-American Men's Doubles champions all-time. Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese were the last Vol duo to do so, winning in 2013 and 2014. The Vols are a perfect 4-0 when a UT pairing reaches the ITA All-American men's doubles championship final.
The Vols are also one of just three programs to claim the ITA All-American Men's Singles and Doubles champion in the same year, with John-Patrick Smith doing so for the Big Orange in 2009.
Junior Angel Diaz and freshman Conor Gannon will begin the tournament Saturday in the pre-qualifying singles round, which consists of 256 automatic, at-large and wild card selections. The final 16 individuals from this group will advance to qualifying.
Tennessee senior Emile Hudd (No. 95), freshman Shunsuke Mitsui and graduate student Mark Wallner are set to join the action in the singles qualifying round, which will take place Monday and Tuesday. This round will be made up of 128 players—112 automatic, at-large and wild card selections, as well as the 16 players from the pre-qualifying tournament. Players in this stage of the event must win three matches to advance to the main draw.
The doubles qualifying round will begin Monday with the No. 33 doubles pairing of sophomore Johannus Monday and senior Martim Prata, along with the No. 48 duo of Hudd and Mitsui, serve as two of the 64 automatic, at-large and wild card selections. This round will require doubles pairings to win a minimum of three matches to advance to the main draw.
The singles main draw begins Wednesday, with Monday (No. 6), Prata (No. 29) and graduate student Adam Walton (No. 5) representing the Vols in this round. This draw consists of 64 players—48 automatic, at-large and wild card selections, along with 16 players from the qualifying tournament.
The doubles main draw will also begin Wednesday, with Tennessee's Walton/Wallner competing in the 64-team draw.
