#2 Vols Down 49ers, 7-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Four straight-set singles victories highlighted the No. 2 Tennessee men's tennis team's 7-0 victory over Charlotte Saturday afternoon.
The Vols (7-1) won the doubles point with the first win coming from Johannus Monday and Conor Gannon, 6-0 on court one over Charlotte's Abhimanyu Vannemreddy and Luke Thomson. Doubles was clinched by the Aussie tandem of Adam Walton and Pat Harper on court one, winning 6-2 over the 11th-ranked pairing of Coy Simon/Stefanos Savva.
"I thought for about 30 minutes, we looked as solid as we have all year," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "We still have to work on some things. We always talk about doubles being so important, especially for our guys and our group. We worked on it a lot this past week and I saw some signs of progress today, which is good."
Tennessee entered singles action with a 1-0 advantage over the 49ers (3-4). Sophomore #10 Monday did not waste any time handing the Vols a 2-0 lead, as he briskly took down Thomas Brown on court one, 6-3, 6-2.
Junior #122 Angel Diaz overpowered Coy Simon of the 49ers, making quick work of the opening set en route to an eventual 6-1, 6-2 victory on court four. The clinch came from freshman #114 Mitsui on court five, as he downed Charlotte's Abhimanyu Vannemreddy, 6-4, 6-1.
The remaining three singles matches were played out, as #21 Walton was the next to finish, holding on in the second set to claim a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 2 singles position.
With a 5-0 lead, #100 Hudd extended Tennessee's advantage with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win, taking the three-set battle over Stefanos Savva of Charlotte on court three. Gannon, a freshman from Ireland, battled to earn a win at the No. 6 singles slot, winning 6-7(1), 7-6(5), 1-0 (10-5) in a third-set super tiebreaker.
WALTS CLIMBING THE CHARTS
With his singles victory Saturday, Walton earned the 106th singles triumph of his Tennessee career, tying him with Mikelis Libietis for the ninth-most in program history.
