LAST TIME OUT
The Vols traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to face the Buckeyes of Ohio State, falling 4-0. The Buckeyes were given the No. 1 distinction in Wednesday's updated ITA Coaches Poll.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
The Vols face Charlotte Friday for the seventh time in program history, now having met the 49ers in five of the past six years. The series' first match came in 2017, a 4-3 Big Orange victory. In 2021, Tennessee claimed a 5-2 win over Charlotte and improved its all-time record to 6-0 over Charlotte. A win would move Tennessee to 7-1 on the season and preserve its perfect home record. The 49ers are off to a 3-2 start to dual season, with wins over Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Radford. Their losses came on the road to then-10th-ranked Wake Forest and then-12th-ranked South Carolina.
SCOUTING COLUMBIA
Sunday serves as just the third-ever matchup between the Vols and Lions, with Columbia taking the two previous matches, 4-3 in 2015 and 4-2 in 2020. The Lions hold a 3-1 overall record this spring, with wins over VCU, Oklahoma State and Old Dominion. Columbia's lone loss came on the road at Texas, 4-0, at the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
WINNING IN THE 865
Tennessee is riding a 27-match win streak, dating back to January 2020. The Vols were victorious in each of the final seven home matches of the abbreviated 2020 dual season, logged a 15-0 mark in Knoxville in 2021 and have won the first five home contests of the 2022 campaign. The last home defeat for the Vols came against Columbia on Jan. 26, 2020.
RANKED VOLS
The ITA released its first singles and doubles rankings update Wednesday, with six Vols receiving singles recognition, as well as one doubles pair. Johannus Monday (10), Adam Walton (21), Mark Wallner (78), Emile Hudd (100), Shunsuke Mitsui (114) and Angel Diaz (122) each earned a ranking in singles, while Mitsui and Hudd were tabbed as the nation's No. 9 doubles pair.
CHASING HISTORY
In October, graduate student Adam Walton earned his 100th career singles win to become the 11th-ever Vol to reach the century mark in career singles triumphs. With a 6-1 doubles win with Pat Harper over Old Dominion's Lalami/Nolan at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Walton stands just 15 doubles victories away from 100. Reaching this feat would make him the sixth Vol in program history to accrue 100 career doubles and singles wins.
Additionally, a singles win for Walton against the Charlotte Saturday would mark his 106th career singles win, tying him with Mikelis Libietis for the ninth-most career singles triumphs in program history.
UP NEXT
Following Tennessee's pair of matches this weekend, up next is the ITA Indoor National Championships in Seattle, Wash. The 16-team event is scheduled to run Feb. 18-21.
