Dominant Singles Play Leads No. 4 Vols Past No. 39 Auburn, 4-3

AUBURN, Ala. – Despite dropping the doubles point, the No. 4 Tennessee men's tennis team used four dominant straight-set victories in singles play to battle past No. 39 Auburn, 4-3, on Friday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The win was the Vols (16-2, 5-1 SEC) third consecutive over the Tigers (6-8, 2-4 SEC) and the 42nd overall in the series between the programs.
In doubles play, Auburn came flying out of the gates, taking a quick set on court three.
UT's tandem of freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata fought past Auburns Max Giddens and Tom Wright, 7-6(0) to even doubles at a set apiece.
At the No. 1 position the Tennessee Australian squad of Adam Walton and Pat Harper fell in a heartbreaker, 7-6(5), to Tad Maclean and Finn Murgett, giving Auburn the early 1-0 lead.
In singles, Monday put the Vols on the board almost instantly with a dominant, 6-0, 6-2, victory over Tim Dollman to even the score at 1-1.
Prata almost immediately followed with a 6-3, 6-3, win on court three over Maclean to put UT up, 2-1.
Graduate student Luca Wiedenman kept the train moving with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court four to put the Vols on the brink of match point.
Minutes later, graduate student Giles Hussey clinched match point at 4-1, as he rolled past Murgett, 7-5, 6-3, at the No. 5 position.
Walton and graduate student Joel Gamerov fell on courts one and six to close out the afternoon.
JOMO STAYS UNDEFEATED IN SEC PLAY
Johannus Monday's victory over Tim Dollman on Friday, kept the freshman standout undefeated and a perfect 6-0 in SEC singles play. Monday is now 15-3 in dual action and 24-5 overall in his freshman campaign.
LUCA MOVES UP IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Luca Wiedenmann's straight-set victory on Friday, upped his career win total to 107, placing him in sole possession of ninth on UT's all-time singles wins list.
