No. 4 Vols Dominate No. 28 Alabama, 6-1

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A strong performance in doubles and four straight-set singles triumphs propelled the fourth-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 28 Alabama, 6-1, on Sunday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
The victory was the Vols (17-2, 6-1 SEC) fifth consecutive over the Crimson Tide (10-7, 2-5 SEC).
In doubles, Alabama's duo of Gabirel Diaz Freire and Zhe Zhou took down freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata, 6-3 on court two.
The Tennessee tandem of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper quickly evened doubles at a set apiece, with a comprehensive, 6-4, victory at No. 1 over Patrick Kaukovalta and Riccardo Roberto.
At No. 3, senior Mark Wallner and graduate student Giles Hussey battled to a 7-6(9) victory over Alexey Nesterov and Edson Ortiz to clinch the doubles point and a massive 1-0 lead for the Vols.
In singles, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann made quick work of Roberto, downing him, 6-2, 6-0 to double the UT advantage.
On court three, the Tide cut into the Vols lead as Kaukovalta took down Prata, 6-3, 6-1.
At No. 2 Monday, picked up his seventh consecutive SEC win, knocking off No. 89 Ortiz with ease, 6-2, 6-2 to put Tennessee up, 3-1.
Minutes later, Walton clinched match point with a dominant victory over Zhou, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1.
Hussey and Wallner closed the afternoon with victories on courts five and six to cement the final score line.
JOMO KEEPS BEATING RANKED OPPONENTS
Freshman Johannus Monday's victory over Edson Ortiz marked his 10th victory over a ranked opponent, a total equaling the number of ranked teams Tennessee has taken down through just 19 dual matches.
LUCA IS THAT DUDE
Luca Wiedenmann's win on Sunday upped his career singles win total to 108 career singles victories, placing him in a tie for eighth with VFL Boris Conkic on Tennessee's all-time singles wins list.
UP NEXT
Tennessee will take nearly two weeks off before returning home to take on Vanderbilt on March 26 and Kentucky on March 28.
