February 26, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Three hard-fought straight-set victories and two three-set wins in singles play, coupled with two huge victories in doubles action, propelled the third-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 22 Mississippi State, 6-1, on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Friday's win marked the first time Tennessee (13-1, 2-0 SEC) has beaten Mississippi State (9-2, 0-1 SEC) in back-to-back meetings since doing so in 2013 and 2014.
In double play, the Vols Australian duo of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper rolled past MSU's Giovanni Oradini and Alberto Colas, 6-2 on court one.
After the Vols fell at No. 2, graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner clinched the doubles point at No. 3 for the second consecutive match, knocking off Nicolas Ocana and Nemanja Malesevic, 6-3 to give UT the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann's win streak came of legal age as he rolled by Carles Hernandez, 6-4, 6-2 on court five. The win was the 104th of his career and 21st consecutive of 2020-21.
Hussey quickly followed Wiedenmann to give UT a 3-0 lead, with a straight set (7-5, 6-3) victory at No. 4 over Alberto Colas.
Junior Martim Prata earned his second consecutive SEC victory, taking down Nemanja Malesevic, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 to clinch match point at 4-0 and improve the Vols to 13-1.
Five-time reigning SEC freshman of the Week Johannus Monday earned his sixth victory over a ranked opponent, battling past No. 87 Florian Broska, 7-6(4), 7-6(4), in a match that saw neither player break the others serve.
A loss from Walton at No. 1 and a three-set triumph from Harper at No. 6 cemented the afternoon's final score line.
