No. 1 Tennessee Pummels Memphis 4-0, Advances to ITA Indoor National Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn – For a second consecutive day, the No. 1 Tennessee men's tennis team picked up a 4-0 victory at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, this time defeating Memphis Saturday afternoon.
The Vols (6-0), won the doubles point with victories on courts two and three, before racing through singles with three straight-set triumphs. With the win, Tennessee improves to 11-1 in the all-time series against in-state foe Memphis (3-1).
Senior Martim Prata clinched match point on court three for the Vols Saturday inside a packed Goodfriend Tennis Center, defeating #88 Jeremy Taylor of Memphis in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
To begin the day on the doubles courts, the Big Orange opened with a win on court two, as Johannus Monday and Prata took down Harry Rock and Pablo Alemany Malea of Memphis, 6-2. The UT duo broke Memphis in game one and were up a pair of breaks at 4-1 after five games, en route to the win.
Court two of doubles saw freshman Shunsuke Mitsui and senior Emile Hudd clinch the doubles point by earning a 6-4 victory over Memphis' Oscar Cutting and Patrick Sydow. With the Memphis pair serving to begin the match, the Vols won deuce point in the first game to go up a break, before Memphis came back with a break in game two. Another break was earned by Hudd and Mitsui in the third game, as they took an early 2-1 advantage, up a break. Later, Hudd and Mitsui earned another break to take a 5-2 lead and would win the match 6-4. Adam Walton and Pat Harper's doubles match went unfinished.
With the Vols holding a 1-0 lead over the Tigers entering singles action, #10 Monday collected Tennessee's first singles victory as he trounced the Tigers' David Stevenson, 6-2, 6-2 on court two to give the Vols a 2-0 lead. Monday got a big break on deuce point of the seventh game to take a commanding 5-2 advantage in the match's opening set
Seconds later, #39 Walton put the finishing touches on his rout #112 Oscar Cutting of Memphis, rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 straight-sets win.
With a 3-0 lead, Tennessee's clinching point came on court three with Prata subjugating 88th-ranked Taylor, 6-2, 6-4, after overcoming an 0-3 deficit, down a break, in the second set. The singles matches of Angel Diaz on court four, #51 Hudd on court five and #125 Mitsui on court six each went unfinished.
SEATTLE BOUND
The dominant victory over Memphis Saturday advances Tennessee to the ITA Indoor National Championships for the second time since 2014, with the Vols also doing so last season. Scheduled for Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash., the 47th running of the annual event showcases 16 of the top men's Division I teams in the four-day tournament to crown an indoor national champion.
HOME DOMINANCE
Since the beginning of the 2019 dual season, Tennessee has put up a robust home record of 44-4. The Vols logged 12 wins in 2019 and 2020, registered a 15-0 mark at home in 2021 and are 5-0 in Knoxville to begin the 2022 campaign.

Next up for the Vols is a road trip north to Columbus, Ohio, to face the fifth-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 4. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET from the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
