Men’s Tennis Central: #1 Tennessee at #5 Ohio State
February 03, 2022 | Men's Tennis
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Tennessee men's tennis team travels north to Ohio for its third top-10 matchup of the season, facing fifth-ranked Ohio State Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
The Vols (6-0) look to capture their second road win of the young season, with each road match thus far having come against a top-five opponent. Tennessee toppled then-fifth-ranked TCU, 4-3 on Jan. 16 in Fort Worth. Friday serves as the Buckeyes' (5-0) third home match of the dual season.
Live stats streaming of the match can both be found here.
LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee is coming off a pair of 4-0 wins over Old Dominion and Memphis at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, advancing to the ITA Indoor National Championships for the second time since 2014.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE
Friday serves as the 12th meeting between the two programs in the series that dates to 1982. Tennessee holds an 8-3 record against the Buckeyes all-time, with the last match coming in 2009, a 4-3 UT win that sent the Big Orange to the ITA Indoor Semifinals. A win for the Vols would give them a third top-10 victory and second top-five triumph through seven matches of the dual slate. The fifth-ranked Buckeyes are currently 5-0, with a pair of ranked wins over then-23rd-ranked Illinois, 4-0, and then-17th-ranked North Carolina, 4-0.
CHASING HISTORY
In October, graduate student Adam Walton earned his 100th career singles win to become the 11th-ever Vol to reach the century mark in career singles triumphs. With a 6-1 doubles win with Pat Harper over Old Dominion's Lalami/Nolan at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Walton stands just 15 doubles victories away from 100. Reaching this feat would make him the sixth Vol in program history to accrue 100 career doubles and singles wins.
Additionally, a singles win for Walton against the Buckeyes would mark his 106th career singles win, tying him with Mikelis Libietis for the ninth-most career singles triumphs in program history.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
Through six singles matches this dual season, with one going unfinished, sophomore Johannus Monday has been first in Tennessee's order of finish in each of his five completed singles matches. One of those came at the top spot in the lineup, while four came at the No. 2 singles slot.
