#1 Vols Earn Second Top-10 Victory of the Season, Defeat #10 Wake Forest 4-3
January 25, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – With the match coming down to the final court for a second consecutive match, the top-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team battled back to rout No. 10 Wake Forest, 4-3 Tuesday afternoon.
The win over the Demon Deacons (7-1) marks Tennessee's (4-0) second top-10 victory of the young season.
Match point came down to court four, where senior Emile Hudd won a third-set tiebreak to spark pandemonium inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center and give UT its fourth win of the year.
"Emile has a really good serve," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "As a coach, you sit over here and figure he's going to be in every game. I'm proud of Emile because coming from Oklahoma State, he had never found himself in positions like this before. To be out there playing in the heat of the battle against TCU really helped and now he's in the heat of the battle now."
After splitting the opening two sets, #51 Hudd battled in set three as he and #75 Filippo Moroni of Wake Forest each held serve throughout the set. Hudd took the match-deciding tiebreak, 7-4 to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4).
The Vols dropped the doubles point for a second consecutive match, but reminiscent to their win at then-fourth-ranked TCU, UT was able to claim wins on four singles courts to win in exhilarating fashion.
"It was a gritty win," Woodruff said. "To be able to play a good team in Wake Forest and come back to win four singles matches, that's a good fight but that's still not where we want to be. We're not going to go through the season and be successful constantly losing the doubles point. So, we need to fix that, but we're still happy to get the win."
Although the Vols dropped the doubles point for a second consecutive match, they combatted that, once again, by taking four singles courts.
Hudd and freshman Shunsuke Mitsui cruised past Wake Forest's Eduardo Nava and Jurabek Karimov, 6-1 on court two to begin doubles action. UT's Adam Walton and Pat Harper dropped a tight battle, 6-7 to #19 Jakob Schnaitter and Siddhant Banthia, while Robert Maciag and Ben Draper of the Demon Deacons defeated Johannus Monday and Martim Prata 7-6.
To start singles play, #10 Johannus Monday handily took down Jurabek Karimov, 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1. An early break in set one set the tone for the remainder of the match on court two.
At the No. 1 singles position, #39 Walton overpowered Eduardo Nava 6-3, 6-1. Walton used a pair of break early in the opening set to build momentum en route to a straight-sets win.
Playing at the No. 6 singles slot was #125 Mitsui, who defeated Wake Forest's #85 Jakob Schnaitter, 7-5, 6-3. Tied at 5-5 in the first set, Mitsui got a key break which aided in securing a straight-sets victory. Wake's Melios Efstathiou def. Prata 6-3, 6-3 on court three, while Angel Diaz dropped his match on court five, 3-6, 0-6.
ANOTHER TOP-10 TRIUMPH
After beating then-fourth-ranked TCU, 4-3 just nine days prior, the Big Orange earned a second top-10 victory just four matches into the dual season. It marks the third time since last season in which Tennessee has come away victorious in consecutive top-10 matchups.
EMILE CLINCHES IT
Hudd's clutch clinch Tuesday was his first since donning the Orange and White. Through three matches of the 2022 dual slate, Hudd is the third Vol to clinch match point. Freshman Conor Gannon clinched both victories over ETSU, before Diaz came up with the clinch on the road at TCU.
UP NEXT
Tennessee's next action will come at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29 at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville. The Vols take on Old Dominion on Friday and either Memphis or Western Michigan on Saturday. The team to go 2-0 on the weekend will secure a spot in the ITA Indoor National Championships, scheduled for Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash.
