Walton Earns 100th Singles Win, Vols Earn 12 Wins on Day Two of Fighting Illini Invitational

URBANA, Ill. – Adam Walton reached the 100-win mark Saturday, as the Tennessee men's tennis team won 12 of its 14 matches on day two of the Fighting Illini Invitational.

The Vols logged a 9-1 singles mark on the day and claimed three of four matches in doubles.

Walton, a graduate student for the Big Orange and the fifth-ranked singles player in the nation, used a 6-4, 7-6(9) victory over Illinois' Olivier Stuart to etch his name forever in Tennessee history as the 11th Vol all-time to account for 100 career singles wins.

In singles, 2021 ITA Singles All-American and sixth-ranked Johannus Monday battled to earn a straight-set victory, 7-6(4), 7-5 over Alex Brown of Illinois. Vol senior and No. 29th-ranked Martim Prata dispatched Alex Petrov (Illinois) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

The Vols continued to pummel the Fighting Illini in singles action, with senior No. 95 Emile Hudd defeating Hunter Heck, 6-4, 6-0, while freshman Shunsuke Mitsui defeated Lucas Horve, 6-3, 6-0, and freshman Conor Gannon took down Gabrielius Guzauskas, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Angel Diaz, a junior for Tennessee, beat Nic Meister 6-2, 6-3 and graduate student Mark Wallner overcame MTSU's John Chin, 6-3, 6-1.

The Vols split a pair of afternoon matches, as Monday knocked off Stepan Holis (MTSU) with a second-set bagel, 6-4, 6-0. MTSU's Edge (No. 104) defeated Prata, 6-4, 7-6(2).

The doubles courts saw the 48th-ranked pairing of Hudd and Mitsui continue to roll, overpowering Illinois' Kenyatte/Brown, 6-3. Monday and Prata, the nations's 33rd-ranked doubles pair trounced Horve/Heck (Illinois), 6-2, while Walton and Gannon routed the Petrov/Meister pairing of Illinois, 6-3. Diaz and Wallner fell to Guzauskas/Stuart (Illinois), 4-6.Â
