Vols Sweep Dual Season-Opening Doubleheader Over ETSU

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's tennis team opened its dual season with a doubleheader sweep over ETSU on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center, defeating the Buccaneers 6-1 in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap.

Alejandro Moreno, Jose Garcia and Boruch Skierkier all picked up two singles wins each, and the doubles teams of Moreno/Ethan Muza & Jose Garcia/Boruch Skierkier also swept their matches to help the Vols start the spring season at 2-0.

The Vols began the day claiming the doubles point over ETSU. It was back and forth on each court, with tiebreakers to end the matches on courts one and two. The Big Orange tandem of Garcia and Skierkier clinched the first win, 6-4, on a Garcia ace against ETSU's Peter Kalocsai and Arenui Luethi. ETSU then put pressure on the Vols, picking up a victory on court one after the No. 61 duo of Oscar Martinez and Martin Vergara beat Dragos Cazacu and Piotr Siekanowicz, 7-6 (7-4). Alejandro Moreno and Ethan Muza came through for UT, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, to seize a 7-6 triumph over Kai Cowcher and Carlos Gonzales.Â

The Vols followed with a dominant effort in singles, claiming victories in five of six positions. Siekanowicz, Garcia and Moreno clinched the team victory with two-set wins to build a 4-0 lead over the Bucs. Muza grabbed the next one after going down early in the first set but coming back to win, 7-5, 6-3. Skierkier finished off the afternoon for the Vols, earning his first-ever D1 victory in straight sets.

The doubles battles in the second match were fierce as well, with Tennessee claiming the doubles point once again. UT jumped out to an early lead after the duo of Moreno and Muza took down Cowcher and Kalocsai, 6-0. Garcia and Skierkier closed it out, 6-4, after going down, 4-0.

Jan Kobierski waited until the second match to make his 2025 debut and he didn't disappoint, tallying a two-set victory over Juan Listo and only dropping three games in the match. The other wins came from Moreno on court two, Garcia on court three and Skierkier on court six to wrap up the sweep of the Buccaneers.
