March 06, 2022 | Men's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. – A comeback win at No. 3 doubles and three straight-set singles victories highlighted a convincing 6-1 road win for the second-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team over No. 14 Ole Miss Sunday.
Team depth was the theme in Sunday's victory, as Tennessee (14-2, 2-0 SEC) collected wins on courts two and three of doubles, as well as five singles triumphs on the day. The Vols handed Ole Miss (10-4, 0-1 SEC) its first home loss of the 2022 dual season.
"Overall, we were pretty resilient and that's a much-needed attribute for success in the SEC," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "Having Pat (Harper) and Martim (Prata) back contributing was and will be an integral part of our success this season. Our depth was on display today."
Harper, a senior, was responsible for the match clinch Sunday, executing a comeback on court six of singles by defeating Jan Soren Hain of Ole Miss in come-from-behind fashion, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. After dropping the opening set, Harper roared back to take 12 of the ensuing 19 games and earn his first singles win of this dual season, doing so in his third spring singles appearance.
The day began with a dominant doubles win on court two from Harper and Adam Walton, the nation's 57th-ranked doubles pair. They took care of business by defeating Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk, 6-2. The Aussie duo improves to 5-1 (2-0 SEC) at the No. 2 doubles position this dual season.
On court three of doubles, the Vols clinched their 11th doubles point of the season with a 7-5 comeback victory from Mark Wallner and Johannus Monday, who overcame a 2-5 deficit to preserve their perfect doubles record, which now stands at 8-0 in dual matches this year.
The match's first singles victory came from freshman Shunsuke Mitsui, who cruised to a win over the Rebels' Simon Junk in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Next to finish was Tennessee's Martim Prata, who claimed his first set, before fending off Lukas Engelhardt, 7-5 in the second-set tiebreak to secure a 6-3, 7-6(5) win and give the Vols a commanding 3-0 lead.
Soon after Harper's clinch, senior #51 Emile Hudd earned a ranked singles victory on court two, routing #91 Finn Reynolds in a pair of tiebreaks, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) to extend the UT lead to 5-0. The sixth point for Tennessee came on court three, as #32 Walton executed a comeback to trounce #18 Nikola Slavic in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).
Ole Miss' #98 John Hallquist Lithen bested Angel Diaz on court three, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, for the Rebels' lone point.
