KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's tennis team dropped a tightly-contested battle to seventh-ranked South Carolina Friday evening, 4-3.
It's the first conference defeat of the dual season for Tennessee (14-3, 2-1 SEC).
The Vols opened the match by taking the doubles point, as the 16th-ranked pairing of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui took a tiebreak victory over South Carolina's #30 Daniel Rodrigues/Connor Thomson, 7-6(2) to clinch doubles.
In singles, Tennessee claimed wins on courts five and six, as senior Pat Harper defeated Jake Beasley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Mitsui took down the Gamecocks' James Story, 6-4, 6-3.
South Carolina (13-3, 2-1 SEC) took singles matches on courts one, two and five, as the match came down to court three. Tennessee junior Angel Diaz won the first set against Connor Thomson at No. 3 singles, 6-0, but dropped the match 6-0, 5-7, 6-7 (0-1). The match came to an abrupt end as a controversial fourth overrule was made against Diaz, and Thomson was declared the winner of the three-set affair.

Adam Walton's 6-3 doubles win with Harper on court two Friday gave the Aussie his 200th career victory, accounting for all singles and doubles wins in his Tennessee career. Walton owns 108 career singles victories and earned the 92nd doubles victory of his career Friday.
