February 21, 2022 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 2 Tennessee men's tennis team conquered the third-ranked Baylor Bears Sunday evening, 4-2 to advance to the championship match of the ITA Indoor National Championship.
The Vols (11-1) move to 5-1 against ranked opponents this season, including three top-13 wins in the past three days.
For the second consecutive day, senior #100 Emile Hudd clinched match point for the Vols, winning 6-4, 7-6(9) over #123 Sven Lah at the No. 3 singles slot. Hudd earned a hard-fought second set win, taking the tiebreak to win in straight sets. Hudd has now clinched match point three times for Tennessee this season.
The match began with Tennessee taking the doubles point over Baylor (13-1), something they have done in each of the first three matches since arriving in Seattle.
Pat Harper and Adam Walton clawed back from an 0-3 deficit to win 6-4 over Baylor's Juampi Mazzuchi and Matias Soto on court two of doubles. The Aussie duo claimed five consecutive games to take a 5-3 advantage, up a break, before their eventual win. On court three, Johannus Monday and Mark Wallner won for a third consecutive match, defeating Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek in 7-5 fashion as the Vols took a key 1-0 advantage. The 13th-ranked pairing of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui saw their doubles match go unfinished while in a tiebreak.
In singles, it was freshman #114 Mitsui to finish first, extending Tennessee's lead to 2-0 with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory on court five, taking down Juampi Mazzuchi.
The next Vols win came from junior #122 Angel Diaz, who fended off Baylor's Finn Bass by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Diaz used a pair of breaks to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set and broke Bass in the seventh game of set two to go up 5-2.
Hudd's win on court three sent the Vols to the championship match of the ITA Indoor National Championships for the first time since 2011
Baylor took matches at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles slots, while sophomore #10 Monday's singles match went unfinished.
FOUR MORE POINTS
A win Monday would be the first team national championship of any kind (NCAA or ITA) in the history of Tennessee men's tennis. Earlier this season, Tennessee toppled the Horned Frogs of TCU, 4-3 on the road.
DOUBLE THE FUN
The Vols have claimed the doubles point three times in as many days and have now won that crucial point eight times in 12 matches this year.
UP NEXT
The Vols will face fourth-ranked TCU Monday at 3 p.m. ET from the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
