Mitsui, Diaz Advance to Singles Round of 16 at ITA Ohio Valley Regional

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The second day of action at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional saw two members of the Tennessee men's tennis team advance to the round of 16 in the singles main draw Friday.

Junior Angel Diaz and freshman Shunsuke Mitsui each picked up a pair of straight-set victories in singles play, as the field was cut to 16.

Diaz reached the round of 16 in the singles main draw by taking out Thiago Pernas (ETSU) 7-6(4), 6-1 in the round of 64, before blanking Purdue's Athell Bennett (9) 6-0, 6-0.

Mitsui won his round of 64 singles match versus Julen Morgan (9) of Purdue, 4-1 (ret.). In the afternoon, Mitsui took down Pau Fanlo (Memphis) 7-6(5), 6-3, to move onto the round of 16 in the singles main draw.

Conor Gannon, a freshman hailing from Ireland, defeated Andre Rodeia (Tennessee Tech) in his round of 64 match Friday morning, 6-4, 6-4. Gannon dropped his round of 32 singles match against Joshua Lapadat, 0-6, 2-6.

The evening action saw Mitsui and Diaz claim victory in the doubles consolation bracket, handling Dayton's pairing of Hiryur/Mavrodiev, 8-3.
