Vols Dominant in Singles Play on Day One of ITA Ohio Valley Regional

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The first full day of fall saw the Tennessee men's tennis team dominate singles action Thursday at the 2021 ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships at Barksdale Stadium.

The Big Orange competed in four singles matches, with three Vols advancing to Friday's round of 64. In the afternoon, the Vols had two doubles pairs compete in the first round of the doubles main draw, splitting the two matches.

Junior Angel Diaz (16) began his round of 128 singles match at 9 a.m. ET, besting Sam Fischer (Lipscomb) 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Shunsuke Mitsui (9) followed the dominance of Diaz with a 6-1, 6-2 singles win over Brett Winters (Xavier).

Tennessee's third singles win came from freshman Conor Gannon, as the Ireland native—after battling through the second set—dispatched Piotr Galus (16) of Purdue to take the match 6-0, 7-6(4). Senior Martim Prata (2) dropped his singles match Thursday, 4-6, 5-7 versus Diego Castro.

As doubles action got underway in the afternoon, Prata and Gannon (9) took down the pairing of Anton Damberg/Frederic Schlossmann (Austin Peay), 8-5 to advance to the round of 32. Diaz and Mitsui (9) were defeated by Thomas Brennan/Micheal Dickson (Butler), 5-8.
