#13 Vols Take Down NC State, 4-1, Advance to ITA Indoor Nationals
January 23, 2021 | Men's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – A dominant performance in doubles and three straight-set victories in singles propelled the 13th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 8 NC State, 4-1, on Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The win pushed the Vols through to the ITA Indoor National Championships for the first time since 2014.
"This was a great victory for the program," volunteer assistant coach Ian Van Cott said. "We look forward to the challenge of being back at national indoors."
UT rolled through doubles play, as the tandems of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper and junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday rolled to 6-3 victories on courts one and two.
Holding a 1-0 lead, Monday doubled the Vols advantage with a dominant, 6-3, 6-0, win over Rafa Izquierdo Luque at No. 2.
After Walton fell on court one, graduate student Giles Hussey breezed past Yannai Barkai, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 position to regain UT's two-point advantage at 3-1. The win was Hussey's eighth consecutive, marking his longest win streak of the year and increasing his record to 15-1.
With the Vols on the cusp of clinching match point, Prata battled past Tadas Babelis 7-5, 7-6, rolling 7-3 in the second-set tiebreak to send the Vols to Chicago for the National Indoors.
"We're really proud of Prata for hanging tough," Van Cott continued. "He stayed calm and was able to execute exactly how he wanted to play under pressure."
PRATA STAYS PERFECT
Junior Martim Prata through five dual matches is the lone Vol to still be undefeated in both singles and doubles.
UP NEXT
The Vols return to action on Friday afternoon for a home bout with Notre Dame. First serve from the Goodfriend Tennis Center is slated for 1 p.m.
