Vols Win Sixth Straight, Down Notre Dame, 7-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A hard fought doubles point win and five straight-set singles victories propelled the 10th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past Notre Dame, 7-0 on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The victory was the Vols (6-0) third shutout of the year as the held Notre Dame (4-2) to wins in just two sets across nine matches.
Doubles play was a back-and-forth affair on every court. On court three, the Tennessee tandem of graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner battled back from a 4-0 deficit, winning six consecutive games to give the Vols the opening doubles set.
After the duo of reigning SEC Player of the Week Martim Prata and SEC Freshman of the Week Johannus Monday fell in a hard-fought 7-5 decision at No. 2, the Australian team of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper used a late service break to take down the Irish's team of Brandon Ancona and William Howells, 7-5 to give UT the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles, the Vols made quick work of things with three straight-set victories from Hussey, Walton and graduate student Luca Wiedenmann to clinch match point at 4-0.
On court four, Hussey dominated Matthew Che, 6-3, 6-1 for his ninth consecutive victory and his fifth straight in dual play.
Wiedenmann quickly followed at No. 5, taking down Connor Fu, 6-3, 6-4 for his 98th career singles triumph, upping the UT advantage to 3-0.
At the No. 1 position, Walton clinched match point with a clean 6-1, 6-4 dispatching of Axel Nefve to improve the Vols to 6-0 on the dual season.
Junior Pat Harper returned to the singles lineup for the first time this Spring, downing Brandon Ancona, 6-3, 7-5, on court six to further extend the Orange & White lead, while earning his first dual victory of 2021.
Prata was the final Vol to win in straight sets, knocking off Tristan McCormick 7-6(4), 6-3 to maintain his unblemished singles record in dual play (6-0).
Monday finished off the 7-0 shutout with a come-from-behind three-set victory at No. 2, knocking off seventh-ranked Richard Ciamarra, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
STREAKING VOLS
Tennessee currently has three players riding singles win streaks of nine matches or more. Giles Hussey and Martim Prata have won their last nine matches, while Wiedenmann is in the midst of a career-long 15 match win streak.

The Vols return to action next Friday for an afternoon showdown with the Duke Blue Devils. First serve from the Goodfriend Tennis Center is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
