Vols Roll Through Final Day of Tar Heel Challenge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Wins in two-of-three doubles matches and four victories in singles play led the Tennessee men's tennis team through the final day of Tar Heel Challenge on Monday in Chapel Hill.
The Orange & White opened the morning, battling through doubles action to grab victories in two of the three played matches.
The graduate student tandem of Giles Hussey and Joel Gamerov rolled, 7-2, in a tiebreak to take down the North Carolina duo of Simon Soendergaard and Peter Murphy, 7-6(2).
Seniors Mark Wallner and Andrew Rogers upped their record to 8-1 as a pair, knocking off UNC's Logan Zapp and Anuj Watane, 6-4.
In singles, freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata each rolled to straight set victories.
Monday breezed past Adam Neff, 6-3, 6-3 and Prata defeated Zapp, 6-3, 6-4. Monday's victory was his ninth of the 2020-21 season and his eighth in a row.
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann earned his 93rd career singles triumph after dominating Carolina's Mark Dillion, 6-1, 6-0. Wiedenmann currently sits in sole possession of 13th in UT's career singles wins list and is just seven wins away from becoming the 10th ever Vol to reach 100 singles victories.
Hussey closed out the morning for UT and his perfect 4-0 trip to Chapel Hill with a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over Murphy.
Up next, Tennessee will return to Knoxville to open up dual match play with a doubleheader against Oklahoma and Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Jan. 16. First serve for the Oklahoma match is set for 10 a.m. ET, while the Tennessee Tech match will get started at 2:30 p.m. ET. Both matches will be played indoors at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
