Vols Take Down Oklahoma and Tennessee Tech to Open Dual Slate

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 13th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team opened 2021 dual match play with a pair of victories over Oklahoma, 5-2, and in-state foe Tennessee Tech, 7-0, on Saturday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
OKLAHOMA
The Vols battled through doubles action to take an early 1-0 lead. After splitting matches on courts two and three, freshman Johannus Monday powered three service aces past the Oklahoma duo of Mason Beiler and Max Stewart, while up 5-4, to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, UT kept things rolling. Junior Martim Prata dominated the Sooners' Mark Mandilk, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Monday quickly followed Prata with a 6-2, 6-2 dismantling of Beiler on court one, to put Tennessee up 3-0 with four matches still on court.
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann wrapped up the victory at 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win over Nathan Han at the No. 5 position.
The victory was Wiedenmann's 11th consecutive and moved him into sole possession of 13th on Tennessee's all-time singles wins list with 94 career singles wins.
Minutes later, graduate student Giles Hussey further increased the Tennessee lead with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Max Stewart on court four. The win improved the Swindon, England native to 12-1 on the year.
Seniors Andrew Rogers and Mark Wallner suffered their first losses of the year, with each falling in third-set super-tiebreaks to close the morning match and the 5-2 score line.

TENNESSEE TECH
Doubles was a back-and-forth affair, with the Tennessee duo of Monday and Prata cruising on court one, 6-2, and the Tennessee Tech team of Evzen Holis and Jun Sasagawa earning a 6-4 victory at No. 2.
At the No. 3 position, Hussey and graduate student Joel Gamerov used a late service break at 4-3 to claim a 6-3 win and the doubles point for the Vols.
In singles the Vols made quick work of the Golden Eagles with Prata, Monday and freshman Josh Raab earning straight-set victories in quick succession to clinch the match at 4-0.
Straight-set thumpings from Wiedenmann and Gamerov, along with a three-set victory from Wallner finished off the Vols shutout win.
