UT Rolls in Final Day of Volunteer Showdown and Fall Season
November 08, 2020 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A dominant sweep of doubles and gritty play across all courts pushed the Tennessee men's tennis team to victories in 11-of-12 matches to close out the final day of the Volunteer Showdown.
"First of all, a big thanks to Mississippi State, South Carolina and especially Middle Tennessee—for joining our pod late—for coming in and competing against us," associate head coach James McKie said. "It was a good way to end the Fall, could we have done some things better? Yes, but I'm proud of our guys this Fall. We played a ton of matches and improved and that's the most important thing."
In doubles, the Vols rolled in all four matches, with the tandem of junior Pat Harper and senior Adam Walton earning their sixth consecutive win as a pair, knocking of MTSU's Stijn Slump and Pavel Motl, 6-2.
In singles, it was victories across nearly the entire board, with graduate student Joel Gamerov seemingly racing off court and dismantling MTSU's Andreas Kramer, 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Andrew Rogers, played one of his most consistent matches of the weekend, knocking off Tom Moonen in comprehensive fashion, 6-3, 6-4.
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann continued his red hot Fall, earning his eighth consecutive win and the 91st of his career as he touched up the Blue Raiders Stijn Slump in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The victory propelled Wiedenmann to a tie for 14th on the programs all-time singles wins list with VFL Paul Podbury.
Junior Martim Prata quickly followed Wiedenmann with a 7-5, 6-2 dispatching of Pavel Motl.
As the afternoon wore on, graduate student Giles Hussey rolled after dropping the opening set against Sean Presson, dropping just a single game over the final two sets to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 and improve his singles record to 9-1.
Freshman Johannus Monday eventually followed Hussey as he battled to a three-set triumph over Francisco Rocha (3-6, 6-2, 7-5).
To close the afternoon, senior Mark Wallner used a first-set tiebreak victory and a late third-set service break to defeat MTSU's Max Rauch, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.

The Vols will take the remainder of the Fall and the beginning of the Winter off, before suiting up for the Spring season in January. That schedule is still to be determined and updates regarding the dual match portion of the season can be followed by following @Vol_Tennis on twitter and checking UTSports.com.
