Vols Conclude Dominant Weekend at Bulldog Challenge
October 25, 2020 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A clean sweep of doubles and a third consecutive dominant day in singles, push the Tennessee men's tennis team to 11 total match wins on the final day of the Bulldog Challenge, on Sunday in Starkville.
"Firstly, it's a privilege to be able to compete," associate head coach James McKie said. "Our guys were professional and played with a purpose. In my opinion, we got better each day, but need to realize that we have work to do. If they want to achieve their goals as a team, they have to hold each other accountable on and off the court. I'm excited for the next few weeks of practice going into hosting the Volunteer Showdown."
The Vols picked up where they left off on Saturday, dominating four doubles squads from LSU, conceding just nine games in four matches.
The senior duo of Andrew Rogers and Mark Wallner and the tandem of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper each earned their third consecutive doubles wins—6-1 and 6-2 respectively—to head back to Knoxville with an unblemished doubles ledger for the weekend.
The teams of graduate student Giles Hussey and freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata and graduate student Luca Wiedenmann each bounced back to earn their first doubles victories of the tournament—6-2 and 6-4 respectively.
In singles, the Vols continued to push, claiming seven wins in eight matches to finish the weekend 22-2 overall in singles play.
Harper and Hussey continued their hot runs of form, remaining undefeated in the Fall. Harper easily dispatched of LSU's Malik Bhatnagar, 6-1, 6-3, while Hussey sprinted past Boris Kozlov, 6-3, 6-1.
The trio of Wallner, Monday and Wiedenmann completed their respective weekends undefeated in singles with each claiming a straight set triumph.
Wiedenmann's victory over LSU's Ben Koch, 7-6(1), 6-1, is the 88th of his career, moving him into sole possession of 17th for career singles wins in program history. He's just two wins behind VFL's Hunter Reese and Chris Mahony who sit in a tie for 15th.
Prata earned his second win of the event, taking down the Tigers Nick Watson, 6-2, 7-5 for the Vols final singles victory.
Walton fell in a hard-fought three set affair to LSU's Ronnie Hohman, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to close the action as the morning transitioned to the early afternoon.
