Vols Roll Through Day One of Volunteer Showdown
November 06, 2020 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Dominant doubles play, seven straight-set victories and two three-set triumphs in singles action propelled the Tennessee men's tennis team through day one of the Volunteer Showdown on Friday in Knoxville.
UT came out quickly, rolling to three doubles wins over duos from Mississippi State.
The senior tandem of Mark Wallner and Andrew Rogers earned their fourth consecutive victory of the Fall as a pair, dominating the Bulldog's squad of Florian Broska and Nicolas Ocana, 6-3.
In singles play, Wallner was the first off court, blitzing past Gregor Ramskogler in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Josh Raab quickly followed, knocking off MSU's Stedman Strickland, 6-1, 6-2 to maintain his perfect Fall record, while improving to 4-0.
Senior Adam Walton knocked off Mississippi State's Nemanja Malisevic in comprehensive fashion, 6-3, 6-2 to keep the momentum going for the Orange & White.
Following Walton, junior Martim Prata, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann and graduate student Giles Hussey claimed straight-set victories in quick succession.
Hussey improved his Fall record to 7-0 and increased his singles win streak to eight matches dating to the conclusion of last season.
Wiedenmann's victory was the 89th of his career, putting him just one singles win away from tying VFL's Hunter Reese and Chris Mahony for 15th in program history for career singles wins.
Junior Pat Harper was the lone Vol to fall in the opening session of the day, dropping a straight-set match to Florian Broska, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Rogers was the final Vol to earn a victory in two sets, racing past MSU's Nicolas Ocana, 7-5, 6-3, improving his own Fall singles ledger to 4-0.
Graduate student Joel Gamerov earned his third singles victory as a member of the Orange & White, battling past Davide Tortora 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to give the Vols their 11th win of the morning.
To close the morning session, freshman Johannus Monday won in near heroic come-from-behind fashion.
Down 2-6, 2-4 after just having his serve broken, Monday battled back to even the second set at 5-5, before winning easily in the eventual tiebreak, 7-3, and dominating the third and final set, 6-1, to claim his fourth consecutive singles win and up his record to 5-2 on the Fall season.
In the afternoon session, Raab fell for the first time this Fall to South Carolina's Thomas Brown, 6-7(4), 6-2, 1-0(5) to close the afternoon for Tennessee.
UT is back on court tomorrow morning, with doubles action beginning at 9 a.m. ET with South Carolina.
