Men’s Tennis Central: Vols Ranked No. 18, Open Season Friday Against Abilene Christian

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's tennis team opens the 2020 spring season at No. 18 in the ITA Preseason poll as it heads into the opening weekend of the season against Abilene Christian.
This marks consecutive seasons the Vols have begun the dual match season ranked in the ITA Preseason Top 25. UT returns seven players from last season's team that finished 2019 with a 22-8 (8-4 SEC) record in head coach Chris Woodruff's second season at the helm.
The 2019 team reached the SEC Championship final for time since 2013 and the NCAA Tournament round of 16 for the first time since 2014. It was also the first time the Big Orange had back-to-back 20 win seasons since 2010 and 2011.
In addition to the team ranking, the Vols enter the spring with two ranked singles players in 23rd-ranked junior Adam Walton and freshman Finn Stodder who checks in at No. 112. In doubles, the senior duo of Scott Jones and Luca Wiedenmann come into the spring ranked No. 49 nationally.
The Vols open the season Friday Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. ET against Abilene Christian on neutral ground in Norman, Okla. Tennessee traveled to Norman for two matches this weekend with the second coming Sunday at No. 22 Oklahoma.
OPENER AGAINST ABILENE CHRISTIAN
Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the Vols and Wildcats. Abilene Christian finished last season with a 22-5 mark and returns senior Jonathan Sheehy who enters the season with a No. 77 singles ranking. Sheehy is one of nine returning players who helped the Wildcats win the Southland Conference regular-season title a year ago.

Walton (25-5 record; played No. 2), Jones (27-12; played No. 3), Wiedenmann (24-11; played No. 3-6), Andrew Rogers (9-4; played 4-6), Pat Harper (12-7; played 4-6) and Martim Prata (8-8; played 3-6).

The Vols have three newcomers on the roster this season: graduate transfer Giles Hussey (Swindon, England, Georgia State), junior transfer Mark Wallner (Munich, Germany, Temple) and freshman Finn Stodder (Berlin, Germany).
