Vols Cruise To Season Opening Win
January 10, 2020 | Men's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – Starting the season with a neutral-site match, the 18th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 win over Abilene Christian Friday at the Heading Family Tennis Center.
The Vols opened the match by taking the doubles point to go into singles up 1-0. Giles Hussey and Scott Jones paired up in doubles on court three, defeating Abilene Christian's Savan Chhabra and Akinori Wada 6-2. ACU evened up doubles by winning on court one 6-3 as the Wildcats' Jackson Fine and Jonathan Sheehy defeated the Vols' duo of Pat Harper and Andrew Rogers.
On court two, Martim Prata and Adam Walton closed out the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Abilene's Dimitrios Azoidis and Riley Tran.
Luca Wiedenmann got Tennessee rolling in singles as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fine. Rogers was close behind as he put UT up 3-0 after he took down Wada 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets.
"Luca is a stud," associate head coach James McKie said. "You always know what you are going to get from Luca. It was good to see him up on the scoreboard first."
On court five, Hussey clinched the match for Tennessee with a straight-set win over Chhabra 6-3, 6-0.
The Vols and Wildcats played out the match with UT winning out on courts one, four and two. No. 23 Walton defeated 77th-ranked Sheehy on one 6-2, 6-4 with Prata beating Tran on four 6-1, 6-4. Jones knocked off Azoidis in two sets 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 to close out the Vols' 7-0 win.
"It was great to see Adam start 2020 with a ranked win, he was rock solid," McKie said. "I thought the team as a whole was really professional in the first match of the season, you never really know what is going to happen. We're in a different environment here at OU, but the guys did a good job. It was a clean performance across the board."
