Vols Knock Off No. 22 Oklahoma On The Road
January 12, 2020 | Men's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 18 Tennessee men's tennis team fought back-and-forth with the 22nd-ranked Oklahoma Sooners Sunday at the Heading Family Tennis Center, but ultimately came out on top 4-3.
After Tennessee jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Oklahoma fought back to tie it at 2-2 before the Vols and Sooners swapped points to remain tied at 3-3 with just one court left in play.
Senior Luca Wiedenmann on court three was the lone Vol left in action and clinched the match for Tennessee with his 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over No. 116 Jochen Bertsch.
"First of all, kudos to Oklahoma," associate head coach James McKie said. "They fought their tails off. We were in control and they kept coming back. It comes down to Luca at the end and when he's in that situation we have full confidence that he is going to do it and help get us the win and he did."
For the second match in-a-row UT started fast by winning the doubles point and taking a 1-0 lead into singles. Giles Hussey and Scott Jones paired up once again on court three and were the first doubles pair done Sunday as they coasted to a 6-1 win over OU's Bertsch and Mark Mandlik.
The Big Orange pairing of Martim Prata and Adam Walton on court two proved effective once again as they clinched the doubles point for UT 6-3 over Oklahoma's Mason Beiler and Max Stewart.
On one, Pat Harper and Andrew Rogers faced off against OU's Jake Van Emburgh and Stefano Tsorotiotis. The match went unfinished with the Vols down 3-5.
Hussey was the first Vol off the court in singles as he defeated Stewart 6-3, 6-4 on court five. The graduate senior is now 2-0 after the opening weekend of the season.
After the Vols went up 2-0 in the match, the Sooners scrapped back with singles match wins on courts six and two. Rogers was defeated by OU's Justin Schlageter in two sets on court six 5-7, 3-6. Jones fell to No. 50 Beiler in straight-sets 3-6, 4-6 on court two.
On court one, No. 23 Walton responded for the Big Orange with a straight-set win over Van Emburgh 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 to put Tennessee back in front 3-2.
Oklahoma fought back on court four, with the Sooner's Mandlik defeating Prata in three sets 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4 to even the match up once again at 3-3.
"The most important thing is we came in here and we got the win," McKie said. "It was very important but it's very clear to me that we have work to do. We have to get back to Knoxville and watch a lot of film and get on the practice courts."
