Scott Jones Falls in Three-Set Battle in Knoxville Challenger
November 04, 2019 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Scott Jones fell in a hard-fought three-set battle to Roy Smith Monday night at the Goodfriend Tennis Center on the opening day of the Knoxville Challenger.
Jones dropped the opening set 3-6, but rallied back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 6-3 victory in the second. The Perth, Australia native led 4-2 in the third set but Smith, ranked No. 329 on the ATP tour, fought back to win the next four games and defeat Jones 6-4.
The Knoxville Challenger continues tomorrow with one current Vol, Andrew Rogers, and four former Volunteers competing in doubles. Rogers is pairing with fellow Middle Tennessee native Tennys Sandgren while the All-American duo of Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos take to the Goodfriend Tennis Center court once again Tuesday.
Hunter Reese rounds out the VFLs as he will partner with JC Aragone.
A year ago, Sandgren and Reese partnered together in doubles, reaching the finals before falling in two sets to Toshihide Matsui and Frederik Nielsen. Meanwhile, Stodder and Touliatos reached the doubles quarterfinals before suffering a three-set defeat.
