VFL Duo Advances to Knoxville Challenger Doubles Final

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee men's tennis standouts Tennys Sandgren (2010-11) and Hunter Reese (2012-15) earned two more victories in the Knoxville Challenger to advance to the event's doubles final, scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at UT's Goodfriend Tennis Center.
In the quarterfinals, the former Vols eliminated the American duo of Robert Galloway/Nathan Pasha in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Both Galloway (No. 111) and Pasha (No. 123) currently rank inside the top-150 of the most recent ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings.
Sandgren (Gallatin, Tenn.) and Reese (Kennesaw, Ga.) dispatched the Canadian team of Peter Polansky/Adil Shamasdin 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals to improve their record to 3-0 in their first tournament competing as a pair.
Current Tennessee senior co-captains Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos were knocked out of the bracket in the quarterfinals, snapping a five-match win streak as a professional pairing. The Volunteer duo fell to eventual finalists Toshihide Matsui/Frederik Nielsen after forcing a third tiebreaker set, as the final score of the match was 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
