Live Results Schedule of EventsExcept for five UT pentathletes who competed in the Clemson Invitational at the same venue last Friday, most of the Big Orange spent this past week training in Knoxville.
"It was a really good week," Tennessee Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We trained very aggressively during the weekdays last week. All of the event groups had very heavy weight training sessions, very heavy sprint training sessions and technical sessions all the way through. We let up over the weekend and had some light practices over the weekend. We should come off that really well, be freshened up by midweek and start competing again on Friday.
"We feel like we've put ourselves in a great situation to go out there and capitalize. The level of competition is a big step forward and the facility is an outstanding facility, so we're going to try to maximize everything."
The teams competing at the Bob Pollock Invitational are Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, J.C. Smith, Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
Senior Shania Collins and juniors Maia McCoy and Stamatia Scarvelis will look to continue their stay among the nation's top women in their respective events. Scarvelis is the only woman to rank in the nation's top five in both throwing events as she is second in the shot put (17.77 meters/58-3.75) and fifth in the weight throw (22.27 meters/73-0.75). Collins has the nation's second-fastest 200 meters at 23.14. McCoy ranks 18th in the 60 meters with a time of 7.36.
On the men's side, UT has six student-athletes ranking in the nation's top 20 in their respective events and all six will be in action. Mustaqeem Williams ranks eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 20.99 and fellow Junior Kwantreyl McConico is 12th at 21.11. Senior Nathan Strother owns the nation's sixth-best time in the 400 meters at 46.45. Junior Zach Long owns the No. 16 time in the 3,000 meters (8:11.06) and will look to top that mark on Saturday. In the men's weight throw, junior Seth Whitener ranks 14th (21.12 meters/69-3.50) and Matthew Zajac ranks 20th (20.52 meters/67-4.00).
Many of UT's distance runners will see their first action since the Indiana-Tennessee Dual on Jan. 6. Sophomore Megan Murray is slated to make her indoor season debut on Saturday in the women's 3,000 meters. Murray earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for this past cross country season after she finished 19th in the women's 6K at the NCAA South Regional.
After this weekend's meet, UT will next compete in Clemson's Tiger Paw Invite on Feb. 9-10 and Washington's Husky Classic on Feb. 9-10.
