KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Jan Kobierski overcame a gritty three-set battle to clinch No. 17 Tennessee's 4-2 victory over third-ranked Texas in its regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon at Barksdale Tennis Stadium.
The triumph marks the Vols' highest-ranked win since their 2022 postseason run, when No. 6 UT beat No. 3 Baylor, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship.
Tennessee (18-7, 9-5 SEC), who handed the Longhorns (23-4, 13-1 SEC) their first conference loss of the season, found momentum early in the match to clinch the doubles point. The eighth-ranked duo of Alex Kotzen and Alejandro Moreno struck first on court one, dominating Texas' Sebastian Gorzny and Timo Legout, 6-1. Shunsuke Mitsui and Alan Jesudason cranked out a 6-3 win over Pierre-Yves Bailly and Sebastian Eriksson at the No. 2 spot to give the Vols a 1-0 lead.
Singles play was a back-and-forth affair, and the Longhorns posted their first point of the day with a win on court four. Ian Cruz logged a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rahul Sachdev on court six, and No. 25 Mitsui followed with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over 49th-ranked Bailly on court two, giving Tennessee a two-point advantage.
The remaining courts fought in three sets, and Texas found a win on court one to put the score at 3-2. Kobierski delivered the winning point on court five, pulling out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Burnett. Moreno was up 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 on No. 66 Braswell at the No. 3 spot when play concluded.
