KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The fourth-ranked Tennessee softball team fell in its regular-season finale to South Carolina, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Sherri Lee Parker Stadium.
It was deja vu for Tennessee (41-8, 19-5 SEC) as it replicated its first inning magic from Saturday's contest. Senior Kiki Milloy launched a solo bomb over center field to put the Lady Vols up one after the game's opening frame.
Held scoreless through five, South Carolina (34-19, 9-15 SEC) notched its first run in the sixth, with outfielder Riley Blampied roping an RBI single to left field and leveling the game at one.
The Gamecocks broke the tie in the top of the seventh, pushing across three runs. A solo shot by Marissa Gonzalez and a two-run double by Blampied gave the Gamecocks a three-run lead entering the bottom half of the seventh.
UT cut the lead to two runs in the latter half of the seventh, as Zaida Puni ripped an RBI double to center field. Rylie West then flew out to Blampied to record the game's final out.
Senior Payton Gottshall pitched the first 3.1 innings for the Big Orange, surrendering no runs on five hits and fanning four. Nicola Simpson made her 10th appearance of the season, replacing Gottshall in the third. Simpson retired five consecutive batters over the next 1.2 innings.
Freshman Karlyn Pickens entered the game in the sixth, giving up four runs – one earned – on five hits with three strikeouts. The freshman suffered the loss and is 9-6 on the year.
South Carolina gave Karsen Ochs the start in the series finale, with the senior tossing two innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two. Bailey Betenbough replaced Ochs in the third, giving up just one hit over the next two innings and fanning three batters.
Saturday starter Donnie Gobourne relieved Ochs in the fifth and tossed the final three innings. The right-hander allowed one run on one hit and struck out four batters. She earned the win and moved to 10-6 on the year.
