May 12, 2023 | Softball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A complete-game shutout from graduate pitcher Ashley Rogers helped propel the fourth-ranked and No. 1-seeded Lady Vols into the SEC Tournament semifinal as they knocked out No. 8 seed Florida, 4-0, Friday at Bogle Park.
Tennessee (42-8) advanced to the tournament semifinal for the third consecutive year and the 18th time in program history. It is also the fourth time in the last five conference tournaments UT has reached the semifinal.
Rogers was locked in from the start as she struck out Skylar Wallace – the 2023 SEC Player of the Year – on three pitches to begin the game. The strikeout was just one of her eight on the day as she threw her 10th complete game of the year and sixth shutout.
The Athens, Tennessee, native improved to 16-1 in 2023 with Friday's victory.
Senior Kiki Milloy and junior Zaida Puni charged the offense as they collected four of Tennessee's seven hits against Florida. Milloy went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored – she reached base and scored after being hit by a pitch in the fourth.
Puni was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double and a run scored.
Florida (36-20) collected just three hits against Rogers and walked four times but was unable to push a run across the plate. Wallace had just one hit while Kendra Falby picked up two.
Rylee Trlicek got the start in the circle for the Gators, tossing four innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Elizabeth Hightower came on in relief and threw the final two innings. She struck out one and surrendered two hits.
Trlicek suffered the loss and is now 13-5 this season.
Sophomore Lair Beautae got the scoring started for UT, knocking an RBI single through the left side of the infield to plate Zaida Puni in the home half of the first.
With two away in the second, sophomore Katie Taylor reached on an error at third to turn the lineup over and bring Milloy to the plate. The senior outfielder then crushed the first she saw for a two-run home run – her 22nd homer of the year – deep to straightaway center field. The long ball extended UT's lead to 3-0.
Tennessee continued its two-out magic in the fourth with Milloy reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. Puni then stepped into the batter's box and lined a 1-1 pitch into left field for an RBI double as Milloy raced home from first to put the Lady Vols up 4-0.
