April 01, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The fifth-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team won early and often in its 6-1 win over Arkansas at Barksdale Stadium Friday evening.
Tennessee (17-5, 5-3 SEC) won the doubles point for the 14th time this season and improves to 13-1 when taking a 1-0 advantage with a doubles victory. The Vols also rolled to five singles wins over Arkansas (10-11, 1-7 SEC), with four of those victories coming in straight sets.
In doubles action to begin the day, Tennessee used victories on courts one and two to take the doubles point and grab a 1-0 advantage in the match. The Aussie duo and 72nd-ranked pairing of Pat Harper and Adam Walton held serve in the ninth game on court one to win 6-3 over Arkansas' Nico Rousset and Alex Reco. The clinch came on court two, as Tennessee's 20th-ranked doubles tandem of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui earned a 6-4 triumph over the Razorbacks' Melvin Manuel and Adrien Burdet. Hudd and Mitsui earned a break in the first game of the match, breaking on an early deuce point.
In singles play, Tennessee's first win came on court one as #21 Adam Walton vanquished #107 Alex Reco of Arkansas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
"Adam has been a model of consistency since he arrived here," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "He has gotten better and better each year. When he started, he was a good four (in singles) and has just progressed up the ranks. He quietly goes about his business. He has a great attitude and doesn't ever get too high or too low. He's another versatile guy. In both singles and doubles, he's performing really well."
The Vols' lead was extended to 3-0 as freshman Conor Gannon rolled past the nation's 67th-ranked singles player, Aleksa Bucan, 6-0, 6-3. After earning the bagel in the first set, Gannon earned yet another break in the second set to take a 3-2 lead, which propelled him to eventual victory on court six. The win gives Gannon the first ranked win of his career.
"Our expectations are high," Woodruff said. "Conor, slowly but surely over the course of the year here, has been doing better and better. I gave him the game ball today because he's, especially as of late, really starting to come on and win some valuable matches for us."
The match clinch came from junior Angel Diaz on court four, as he defeated Adrien Burdet in straights, 6-4, 6-2. Diaz was up a break in the first set at 3-1 and went on to win deuce point in the tenth game of the opening set to win 6-4. It marks Diaz's fourth clinch of the dual season. The remaining matches would be played out following the clinch.
Tennessee's fifth point of the match came with a straight-set win on court three as freshman Mitsui took down Oscar Pinto Sansano, 6-2, 7-5. Like Diaz, Mitsui was up a break at 3-1 in the first set, before going up 4-1 with another break in the first.
With the match having been clinched, the singles matches of Hudd on court two and Tennessee senior Martim Prata on court five played a 10-point third-set. Hudd took his match, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) over Arkansas' Nico Rousset and Prata narrowly dropped his tiebreaker to Melvin Manuel, 3-6, 7-5, 0-1 (4-10).
