#1 Vols Extend Home Winning Streak to 30 Matches in 5-2 Victory Over Furman

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 1 Tennessee men's tennis team opened its outdoor season by taking down Furman, 5-2 on Tuesday in Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (12-2) won the doubles point for the ninth time this season and are 9-0 when taking that crucial 1-0 advantage.
Freshman sensation Shunsuke Mitsui clinched match point for Tennessee, marking his fourth clinch of the season. His win came on court five over the Paladins' James Roelofse, 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles action to start the day under sunny Knoxville skies, the Vols earned victories on courts two and three, with UT's No. 3 doubles pairing of Johannus Monday and Mark Wallner taking down Cole Burnam and Elijah Poritzky, 6-4. The doubles clinch came on court two, as the 57th-ranked pairing of Adam Walton and Pat Harper defeated James Roelofse and Emil Westling, 7-5. Furman (8-3) won 6-1 on court one of doubles.
On court one of singles, reigning SEC Player of the Week and sixth-ranked Johannus Monday raced to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ivan Mitric at the top of UT's lineup. After Mitric jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, Monday won nine consecutive games to go up 4-0 in the second set. He won 11 of the match's final 12 games to hand Tennessee a 2-0 lead.
Tennessee's next two singles victories came mere moments apart from each other, as junior Angel Diaz took his match on court three, conquering Elijah Poritzky, 6-4, 6-2. Soon to follow was Mitsui's clinch on court five.
Extending the Vols' lead to 5-1 was senior Martim Prata, making his fifth singles appearance of the spring and winning 6-4, 7-6(5) against Furman's Emil Westling. Leading 5-4 in the first set, Prata took the deuce point to win that opening stanza.
Furman's Jamie Connel overcame Tennessee's #51 Emile Hudd, 7-6(7), 6-4 at the No. 2 singles slot, while Drew Singerman of the Paladins took a 10-point third-set tiebreaker over UT freshman Conor Gannon on court six, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (15-13).

Tuesday marked Tennessee's final non-conference match, as a weekend road trip to Mississippi looms and will begin the 12-match SEC slate for the Vols.
