Tennessee Rises to No. 1 in ITA Rankings
January 19, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn – Following a top-five road triumph at No. 5 TCU Sunday and a 3-0 start to the 2022 dual season, the Tennessee men's tennis team ascended to the No. 1 position in Wednesday's updated ITA Top-25 Coaches Poll.
It marks the program's first time as the nation's top team since the Big Orange held that designation from March 15-21, 2011. The Vols began the 2022 season as the fourth-ranked team in the ITA rankings.
Chris Woodruff, in his fifth season at the helm on Rocky Top, has led the Vols to an 88-23 (.793) overall record during that stretch, with a 28-11 mark (.718) in SEC play.
As the defending SEC Tournament Champions, Tennessee's significant top-five road victory over the Horned Frogs, 4-3 on Sunday, was key in elevating the Vols in the national rankings.
During that win in Fort Worth, junior Angel Diaz clinched the exhilarating match for Tennessee (3-0), defeating TCU's #33 Lui Maxted in a three-set battle, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Diaz is a perfect 2-0 in singles play this dual season.
Graduate student Adam Walton claimed career singles win No. 103 Sunday, winning a crucial match over TCU's #68 Luc Fomba in another three-set battle, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, earning his 28th career victory over a ranked opponent.
Sophomore standout Johannus Monday is 1-0 at the No. 1 singles position and 1-0 at No. 2 this dual season, taking a convincing 6-2, 6-4 decision over TCU's 19th-ranked Juan Carlos Aguilar at the No. 2 spot Sunday.
Freshman Shunsuke Mitsui is 2-0 at the No. 4 singles slot and is 1-0 at No. 5 this year. In the first road match of his collegiate career, he took down Tomas Jirousek of TCU in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Newcomer and senior Emile Hudd is off to a 2-1 start in dual matches, while Pat Harper is 1-1 on the doubles courts with Walton this season. Freshman Conor Gannon clinched both matches in a doubleheader against ETSU to begin the season and is 2-1 in singles action through three dual matches.
