#4 Vols Sweep ETSU Twice in Dominant Start to Dual Season
January 12, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn – The fourth-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team handily defeated ETSU Wednesday in each of the dual season-opening doubleheader matches, 7-0 and 4-0.
The morning match saw the Vols (2-0) run the table in 7-0 fashion, before taking a 4-0 decision over the Buccaneers (0-2) in the afternoon.
In the first two dual matches of his Tennessee career, freshman Conor Gannon clinched both matches for the Vols Wednesday, each at the No. 6 singles position.
"I think it's a good start for the guys," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "We've worked hard. ETSU did some things well. We did some things well. Really, for us, it's just the process of trying to get better and not really worrying so much about who we're playing or where we're playing. We're just trying to make sure that each day, we improve in a few areas of our games."
MATCH 1 (ETSU)
In the morning match, the sixth-ranked doubles pair of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui defeated ETSU's Dimitri Badra and Hugo Lobo, 6-3.
Tennessee's Johannus Monday and Mark Wallner paired up at the No. 3 doubles slot and took down Juan Jose Vargas and Juan Lombisano of ETSU, 6-3 to clinch the Vols' first doubles point of the year. Pat Harper and Adam Walton's doubles match went unfinished, leading 4-2.
In singles action, Monday, a sophomore, speedily won his match, 6-1, 6-2 over ETSU's Dimitri Badra. Mitsui was soon to follow, as he was victorious over Hugo Lobo, 6-2, 6-3
Gannon, the Irishman, clinched the season-opening match with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over the Buccaneers' Francisco Lamas.
The match would be played out, as Hudd defeated Thiago Pernas, 6-3, 6-1, and Angel Diaz claimed a win against Juan Zabala, 6-2, 6-3. Walton won the first singles match of his fifth year on Rocky Top, 6-3, 5-4, ret., over #65 Frazier Rengifo.
MATCH 2 (ETSU)
The afternoon match began with a stifling attack from Hudd and Mitsui in doubles, trouncing ETSU's Pernas and Lamas, 6-1. The reigning NCAA Doubles National Champions, Harper and Walton, defeat ETSU's Rengifo and Pernas, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point for the Vols in the second match of the day. Wallner and Monday's doubles match went unfinished, leading 5-3 at the time of the clinch.
"We still have a long way to go," Woodruff said. "This is pretty typical, although if I remember correctly, this match was better than our first match in doubles last year. I think we've got some very skilled players. As a coaching staff, we'll try to continue to grow on what we see and build up their strengths. But, we've got a long way to go in doubles and we all know how important the doubles point is."
The day's second round of singles play saw Hudd win in dominant fashion, 6-0, 6-2. On his match point, he served a punishing ace to give UT a 2-0 advantage. Following that effort was Mitsui, who breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over ETSU's Lamas.
Gannon once again gave the Big Orange the clinching point, using a dominant second set to earn a 6-3, 6-0 victory as the Vols won their second match of the day. The afternoon singles matches of Monday, Walton and Diaz went unfinished following the clinch.
CONTINUED DOUBLES DOMINANCE
Winning the doubles point in each match Wednesday, the Vols continued the success they found on the doubles courts a season ago. The 2021 dual slate saw the Big Orange claim the doubles point in 26 of its 32 matches, boasting a 24-2 record when earning that crucial advantage.
IN-STATE SUCCESS
Wednesday's pair of victories gave the Tennessee its 40th and 41st consecutive wins over ETSU, now leading the all-time series 41-3. Those 41 wins in a row mark the longest win streak over a single opponent in program history.
