Vols Announce Fall Schedule
September 01, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Following a 28-win season that saw the Vols capture the program's fourth SEC Tournament Championship, advance to the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 2010 and finish the year ranked No. 4 in the final ITA team rankings, Tennessee men's tennis head coach Chris Woodruff announced the fall portion of the 2021-22 schedule Wednesday.
Tennessee opens the fall slate at home, serving host to the Knoxville Showdown, set to run Sept. 10-12.
A trio of USTA tournaments—the Champaign Future (Sept. 11-18), Fayetteville Future (Sept. 18-25) and Lubbock Future (Sept. 25-Oct. 2)—sandwich the ITA Regionals (Sept. 23-27), which will be held in Knoxville.
The ITA All-American Championships, taking place from Oct. 2-10 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, precede the Fighting Illini Invitational in Champaign, Illinois, which is scheduled for Oct. 15-17. Champaign will also be the site of the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships.
After a month on the road, the Vols return to Knoxville for the Tennessee Four-Man (Oct. 22-24), before traveling to Columbia, South Carolina, for the Gamecock Hidden Dual (Oct. 29-31).
The final road tournament of the fall season comes as the Big Orange visit the ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 4-7) in San Diego, California, and wrap up fall competition with the Knoxville Challenger (Nov. 7-14).
The Vols welcome four newcomers to the 2021-22 squad, including two freshmen.
Freshman Shunsuke Mitsui, hailing from Shizuoka, Japan, is the first player from Japan to represent Tennessee on court. Mitsui held a career-high ITF Junior World Ranking of sixth, while appearing in all four junior Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open). He is the first top-10 ITF recruit to play for the Vols since 2009-10.
Emile Hudd, from London, United Kingdom, joins the Vols after three seasons at Oklahoma State. Hudd was a mainstay at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles for the Cowboys, compiling records of 33-22 in singles and 35-16 in doubles over the course of three seasons.
Angel Diaz, a junior, joins the Vols by way of Manabi, Ecuador. Diaz compiled a record of 26-14 in singles and 22-12 in doubles during his two previous seasons at UT Arlington.
Freshman Conor Gannon is set to become the first-ever Irishman to suit up for Tennessee. Gannon is a native of Foxrock, Dublin, Ireland and holds eight ITF junior titles, with three coming in singles and five in doubles play.
Among UT's returners is the Aussie tandem of 2021 NCAA Doubles Champions Adam Walton and Pat Harper, along with sophomore Johannus Monday, senior Martim Prata and graduate student Mark Wallner.
