May 17, 2021 | Men's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. – Two comprehensive victories in doubles, and two massive three-set victories in singles after falling behind 3-2, pushed the No. 3 Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 18 Arizona in the Super Regional stage of the NCAA Tournament on Monday at the USTA National Campus.
The win sends UT (27-3) to the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2013 and for the 10th time in program history, while Arizona's (21-8) season comes to a close.
In doubles play, the Vols stormed past the Wildcats, grabbing a pair of dominant victories.
On court one, the Aussie duo of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper cruised by Carlos Hassey and Alejandro Reguant, 6-2.
On court two, freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata clinched the doubles point and a crucial, 1-0, lead for the Vols with a 6-3 victory over Herman Hoeyeraal and Jonas Ziverts.
In singles, Arizona came out swinging, immediately evening the score at 1-1 as Hassey picked up a straight-set victory at No. 6 over Harper.
At the No. 3 position, Prata gave the Vols their advantage back, as he cruised by Filip Malbasic, 6-0, 6-3.
The Wildcats won a pair of matches in straight sets on courts two and five to put themselves on the brink of match point at 3-2.
At No. 5, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann battled past Hoeyeraal in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to even the score with just Walton left on court.
With the tie even at three, and Walton in a third set, UT's No. 1 blitzed past Arizona's freshman standout, Gustaf Strom, 6-2 in the deciding set to give the Vols the dramatic, 4-3 triumph.
LUCA JUST DOESN'T LOSE
Despite having his serve broken at 5-2 in the third set, Luca Wiedenmann held serve at 5-4 to earn his 33rd victory of the academic year, while keeping the Vols hopes alive late. Wiedenmann's victory was the 116th of his career.
PRATA SAVES HIS BEST FOR THE POSTSEASON
Martim Prata has saved his best form of the season for the most important time of the year. His dominant straight-set victory upped his postseason singles record to 4-0 in six matches played for the Vols.
WALTS CLINCHES YET ANOTHER BIG MATCH FOR UT
Adam Walton is now 3-0 in this season's NCAA Tournament and his clinch in Monday's match is his second of this postseason and fourth postseason clinch of his career after doing so against Florida and NC State in 2019.
Walton now has 95 career singles victories and is just five singles triumphs away from becoming the 11th-ever Vol to reach 100 career singles victories.
UP NEXT
Tennessee will suit up on Thursday for its quarterfinal match with No. 11 Georgia. First serve from the USTA National Campus is still to be determined and will be decided following the remainder of Monday's matches.
