April 20, 2021 | Men's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After the cancellation of the 2020 SEC Tournament, the fourth-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team opens its run at the 2021 SEC Tournament title with a quarterfinal clash with No. 12 and seventh-seeded Ole Miss on Wednesday afternoon.
First serve from the Billingsley Tennis Center is slated for 1 p.m. ET with live stats being provided by statbroadcast and live streaming provided through playsight.
Attendance for the 2021 SEC Men's Tennis Championship is granted on a first-come, first-serve basis with all 12 matches open for public viewing.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Sunday, the Vols punished eighth-ranked Texas A&M, 4-0, in a senior day showdown in Knoxville.
After breezing through the doubles point, the Vols earned dominant straight-set victories from freshman Johannus Monday, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann and junior Martim Prata in quick succession.
The victory was UT's 13th dual victory over a ranked opponent in the 2021 season.
SCOUTING OLE MISS
This will be the third meeting between the Vols and Rebels in this dual season, with UT earning a tight, 4-2, victory in Raleigh on Jan. 22 at ITA Kickoff Weekend, before winning 14-of-14 sets in a dominant, 7-0, triumph on Feb. 28 in Knoxville.
A win would be Tennessee's fourth straight over Ole Miss, marking its longest win streak in the series since winning five in a row from 2005-10.
In the rankings, Ole Miss features a trio of ranked singles players (No. 14 Finn Reynolds, No. 27 Nikola Slavic and No. 46 Tim Sandkaulen) and the top-ranked doubles tandem in the nation in Tim Sandkaulen and Finn Reynolds.
TENNESSEE AT THE SEC TOURNAMENT
The Vols are 37-27 all-time at the SEC Tournament dating to the tournament's inception in 1990.
Entering this week's event, UT will be looking for its fourth SEC Tournament title and first since 2010 when the Vols became the first program to shut out each of their opponents en route to the tournament crown.
The last time the Orange & White competed in the SEC's postseason event they advanced to the tournament final in dramatic fashion, knocking off conference rival Florida, 4-3, earning a dramatic clinch from current senior, Adam Walton.
JOMO AND LUCA DOMINATE SEC PLAY
The tandem of freshman Johannus Monday and graduate student Luca Wiedenmann ripped through Sec play, with the players combining for a 21-3 record against SEC foes.
In his first season on Rocky Top, SEC Freshman of the Year candidate Monday went 11-1 in conference action with seven of those 11 victories coming against ranked opponenets.
Wiedenmann was a rock at the bottom of the UT lineup, winning all 10 of his SEC matches in straight sets and holding the same record in SEC play as UT as a team.
In every match where Wiedenmann knocked off his opponent, the Vols won and in the pair of instances where he fell, so did the Orange & White.
VOLS NO STRANGER TO FACING OPPONENT THREE TIMES
In UT's last full dual season in 2018-19, the Orange & White took on Florida three times, playing the Gators in SEC play, the 2019 SEC Tournament and in the Round of 16 of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
UP NEXT
Following a win on Wednesday, the Vols will take on the winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup between Georgia and South Carolina on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.
