FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A dominant display in doubles and a trio of victories in singles pushed the No. 5 Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 13 Ole Miss, 4-1, on Wednesday at the SEC quarterfinals in Fayetteville.
The win was the Vols (22-3) third over Ole Miss (11-10) this season and propelled UT into the SEC semis for the second consecutive conference tournament.
The Vols rolled through the doubles point, dropping just three total games on courts two and three.
At No. 3, the tandem of graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner cruised by the Ole Miss team of Jan Soren Hain and Jakob Cadonau, 6-1.
The duo of freshman Johannus Monday and junior Martim Prata quickly followed with a 6-2 demolition of Simon Junk and Brady Draheim to give UT the early, 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Vols kept the momentum going as Hussey won the final 11 games on court five to take down Simon Junk, 6-2, 6-0 to double the Vols lead to, 2-0.
Less than a minute later, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann put the Vols up, 3-0, with a dominant, 6-3, 6-1 victory over John Hallquist Lithen.
After senior Andrew Rogers fell in a hard-fought affair at No. 6, senior Adam Walton clinched yet another postseason match with a come-from-behind, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 17 Finn Reynolds to give the Vols match point at 4-1 and a spot in the SEC semis.
LUCA JUST WINS
Luca Wiedenmann's comprehensive straight-set victory on Wednesday was the 113th of his career and third consecutive since falling in three sets against Arkansas' Aleksa Bucan on April 4. Wiedenmann is now in sole possession of seventh on Tennessee's all-time singles wins list.
THE RANKED VICTORIES JUST KEEP COMING
Wednesday's triumph over the Rebels was UT's 14th victory over a ranked opponent and the Orange & White's 11th over a team ranked inside the top-25 of the ITA team rankings.
WALTS' CLUTCH POSTSEASON PLAY CONTINUES
In each of UT's last five victories in the postseason, Adam Walton has completed and won his match, while clinching match point in wins over Florida at the 2019 SEC Tournament, NC State to send Tennessee to the 2019 NCAA Round of 16 and in Wednesday's win over Ole Miss.
