March 07, 2021 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A loss of the doubles point and multiple straight-set defeats were too much for the No. 3 Tennessee men's tennis team to overcome as the Vols fell to No. 10 Florida, 5-2, on Sunday in Gainesville.
The loss was Tennessee's (15-2, 4-1 SEC) first in SEC play as Florida (10-1, 6-0 SEC) moved into sole possession of the conference's top spot.
In doubles the programs, split sets on courts one and two, with the UT Australian duo of Pat Harper and Adam Walton knocking off the No. 45 team of Sam Riffice and Duarte Vale, 6-4.
On court three, Tennessee's tandem of graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner fell in a hard-fought, 7-6(2), decision, giving Florida the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, the Gators kept the momentum pumping, earning straight-set victories at No.'s 6, 4 and 5 in quick succession to clinch match point at 4-0.
With the result decided, junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday grabbed wins on courts two and three.
On court two, Monday earned his ninth ranked win of the season, taking down eighth-ranked Riffice, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in come-from-behind fashion.
