Men’s Golf Central: LSU Invitational
February 25, 2021 | Men's Golf
The 14th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team tees off its second tournament of the spring this weekend, taking part in the competitively-contested LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
Play is set to begin Friday morning and conclude Sunday afternoon, with one 18-hole round of competition each day.
The LSU Invitational is set to feature 15 teams – 12 of which are from the SEC (Texas A&M and Arkansas are the lone SEC teams not competing). Including Tennessee, there are eight top-25 teams slated to compete in Baton Rouge.
Tennessee opened its spring season two weeks ago in Gainesville, Florida, at the Gators Invitational, finishing tied for eighth overall in the 20-team field. Due to inclement weather, the tournament's three rounds were pushed into two days. Spencer Cross was the Vols' highest finisher – shooting 6-under and tying for 11th place.
Prior to the Gators Invitational, Tennessee put together a successful fall in which it did not finish lower than fourth-place in any of its three SEC-only tournaments, while posting the second-best overall record in the conference.
VOLS' LINEUP
Bryce Lewis
The LSU Invitational marks Lewis' fifth tournament as a member of Tennessee's lineup during the 2020-21 season. Of the Vols' four golfers who have competed in every tournament of the 2020-21 season, Lewis has the highest average finish (25th). Lewis opened the spring by shooting 3-under during the Gators Invitational and tying for 28th place. Of players who have competed in more than one tournament, his 70.33 stroke average leads the team.
Rhys Nevin
Tying for 24th place and shooting 4-under, Nevin carded the Vols' second-best score at the Gators Invitational. It marked his 22nd career top-25 individual finish—a mark that leads the team. Nevin has finished in the top 25 during three of Tennessee's four tournaments during the 2020-21 season.
Spencer Cross
Cross was Tennessee's top finisher during the Gators Invitational, finishing tied for 11th overall after shooting 6-under 204. Cross caught fire during the back nine of the tournament's final round, shooting five birdies in the final eight holes.
Hunter Wolcott
One of the four golfers to be a member of the Vols' lineup during every tournament of the 2020-21 season, Wolcott has two top-10 finishes and has posted a 70.83 stroke average this season.
Tyler Johnson
Johnson saw his first action of the 2020-21 season during the Gators Invitational, competing as an individual. The Knoxville native shot 1-over and tied for 57th place. Johnson has 14 top-25 finishes during his career, and has Tennessee's most recent individual win, as he claimed the individual title at the 2019 Intercollegiate at the Grove.
