Vols Tied For Second Through One Round at LSU Invitational
February 26, 2021 | Men's Golf
BATON ROUGE, La. – The 14th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team is tied for second and just one stroke out of the lead after one round of the 15-team LSU Invitational.
Â
The Vols shot 6-over 294 during Friday's first round and were paced by Rhys Nevin, who shot 1-under and is currently tied for third overall. Spencer Cross and Hunter Wolcott also had solid first-round outings and are in the top 20 of the 90-man field entering Saturday's second round.
Â
No. 5 Illinois currently leads the field at 5-over, while No. 10 Georgia is tied with Tennessee at 6-over.
Â
Of the 90 golfers in the field at the tournament, just six shot under par for the day—a testament to the difficulty that the course and weather presented.
Â
"The guys did a really good job staying patient and grinding out a good round in some very tough conditions," head coach Brennan Webb said. "The wind was up all day and the course set up demanded that you played with a lot of discipline."
Â
At 1-under, Nevin was of the six golfers to shoot under par on Friday. Nevin will enter Saturday in third place and just two strokes out of the individual lead. The round marked Nevin's ninth par or better round of the 2020-21 season—a mark that is second-highest on the team.
Â
Cross, who is coming off of a team-best 11th-place finish at the Gators Invitational earlier this month, continued his stretch of high-quality play during Friday's first round. Cross shot 2-over for the day and is tied for 16th place—just two strokes outside the top 10. Wolcott also shot 2-over on Friday and is set to enter Saturday in a tie for 16th overall.
Â
Coming in just outside the top 25 at 27th place, Bryce Lewis gave the Vols their fourth counting round—carding a 3-over 75. Lewis, Cross and Nevin all have recorded a team-leading 11 counting rounds, while Wolcott has 10.
Â
In his second tournament of the spring and first as a member of Tennessee's lineup, Tyler Johnson shot 7-over during round one.
Â
Competing as an individual and also in his second action of the season, Jake Hall shot 5-over and is tied for 51st place.
