February 07, 2020 | Men's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C. – The 17th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team took down Duke Friday night at the Sheffield Tennis Center, 6-1, winning six three-set singles matches.
"Wins like these don't happen very often, especially against a talented team like Duke," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "Our guys showed a lot of fight tonight, we lost four of six first sets but they kept on chipping away, working hard and the points started going our way. These guys are tough, they are a tough group of people."
Tennessee (10-1) dropped the doubles point for just the third time this season suffering losses on courts one and three. The Blue Devils' Nick Stachowiak and Sean Sculley defeated Giles Hussey and Pat Harper on court one, 6-1. Luca Keist and Spencer Furman clinched the point for Duke on two with a 6-3 win over Mark Wallner and Andrew Rogers.
Adam Walton and Martim Prata went unfinished on court three against Garrett Johns and Samuel Rubell.
Duke (7-1) started fast in singles as it took four of six first sets against the Vols. Only Prata on court two and Luca Wiedenmann on three topped the Blue Devils in the opening set. In the second sets, the Vols battled back, winning on courts one, four, five and six. Prata and Wiedenmann both fell in their second sets, 5-7.
Court five was the first to finish as Rogers defeated Rubell 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, tying up the match at 1-1.
Hussey closed out his match on four, taking down Furman 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. His win was quickly followed by Harper on No. 6. The sophomore Aussie beat Johns 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, earning his first singles win of the spring.
Wiedenmann, Mr. Clincher himself, sealed the win for UT with his 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory on court three over Keist.
Tennessee and Duke played out the remaining two matches which saw No. 13 Walton beat Stachowiak on court one 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Prata win out over Edu Guell 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, at No. 2.
"We're right in the thick of things now," Woodruff said. "Wins are great but we'll go back and watch and study it. Like I always tell them, it's a process and we'll get better and see where we are at the end of May."
