Lady Vols Push Past Cincinnati, Chattanooga

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 26/19 Tennessee women's tennis team swept their final doubleheader of the 2020 season on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The Lady Vols (9-1) opened the day with a 5-0 win over Cincinnati (6-4). UT followed with a 4-1 win over UT Chattanooga (5-3).
The Lady Vols took the doubles point against Cincinnati, but lost it in a split decision to UTC.
The No. 8-ranked junior duo of Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin defeated the Bearcats' Alexia Coutino and Caroline Morton 6-0 on court one. Shortly after, senior Johanna Silva and sophomore Rebeka Mertena took their match on court two 6-2 over Cincinnati's Kelli Niehaus and Anna Philp to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, McGiffin opened singles scoring with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cincinnati's Sofia Bruno on court six. No. 73-ranked Staines followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court two over Alexia Coutino.
Freshman Hadley Doyle clinched the match on court five with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Philp. Seconds after, No. 100-ranked freshman Carly Briggs defeated Maria Coutino 6-4, 6-2.
Against UTC, Briggs and senior Ariadna Riley took down Callie Billman and Grace Anne Dunavant 6-1 on court three. The Lady Vols dropped matches on courts one and two to give UTC the doubles point.
UT responded after dropping the doubles point, winning four-straight singles matches in straight sets.
No. 55-ranked Silva dominantly defeated UTC's Polina Goloputov 6-0, 6-1 on court two to open singles scoring. No. 73-ranked Staines followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bogdana Zaporozhets on court three.
No. 100-ranked Briggs defeated Caroline Gibbons of UTC 6-2, 6-0 on court four to end her day. The freshman goes into SEC play undefeated in dual matches.
No. 40-ranked Mertena clinched the match for the Lady Vols with a 6-0, 6-3 win over UTC's Jessie Young on court one.
Up next, the Lady Vols will open SEC play with a dual against Georgia in Athens, Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 29.
