Lady Vols Fall to Georgia, 4-0
February 29, 2020 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Saturday afternoon saw the No. 23-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team fall to No. 9-ranked Georgia on the road, 4-0.
"Today didn't go as planned, but we have to give all the credit to Georgia," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "They are a great team and were better than us."
UT (9-2, 0-1 SEC) gave up the doubles point to open the match. On court one, the No. 8-ranked duo of Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin were down 4-5 as the doubles point was clinched.
"I'm really excited about our young players," Ojeda said. "Our two freshmen were battling and in control of their matches, both of them were up a set and had an early lead in the second. Rebeka (Mertena) did an outstanding job competing against one of the best players in the country. We are in a good spot and excited for our upcoming competitions."
Georgia (6-2, 1-0 SEC) got singles wins over No. 73-ranked Staines on court three, McGiffin on court six, and No. 40-ranked Rebeka Mertena on court one. Freshmen Carly Briggs and Hadley Doyle were ahead on courts four and five, respectively, when the match ended.
No. 100-ranked Briggs won a tightly-contested opening set 7-6 (7-3) over UGA's No. 104-ranked Morgan Coppoc. The freshman was tied at 1-1 in the second set as Georgia clinched the match.
Doyle took the first set 6-4 on court five over Elena Christofi. She was up 2-1 when the match ended.
The Lady Vols will head to Mississippi to take on Mississippi State on Friday, March 6 and Ole Miss on Sunday, March 8.
