February 15, 2020 | Men's Golf
The Vols tee off the spring outside of the United States
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 23 Tennessee men's golf team gets underway with its spring season Sunday, traveling to Puerto Rico for the 28th annual Puerto Rico Classic.
This spring's opener, hosted by Purdue, marks the first time since 2011 that Tennessee will compete outside of the mainland United States.
The Vols sent individuals to compete in Dorado, Puerto Rico in 2005, but have never competed in Puerto Rico as a team.
The Puerto Rico Classic field features 15 teams, six of which are ranked inside the top 50. Tennessee joins Georgia, Ole Miss and Alabama as the tournament's SEC representatives.
Tennessee enters the spring coming off of a fall season in which it registered a tournament team championship at the Intercollegiate at the Grove along with second and third place finishes at the Inverness Intercollegiate and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, respectively.
This past fall marked the fourth consecutive fall in which Tennessee has won at least one tournament.
Redshirt junior Tyler Johnson claimed the Vols' lone individual win of the fall, winning the Intercollegiate at The Grove in October. Of Tennessee's 10 golfers that competed in at least two fall tournaments, Johnson's 71.37 stroke average during the fall was the lowest on the team.
Along with Johnson, senior Rhys Nevin and redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott are also included in Tennessee's opening lineup of the spring after competing in all five of the Vols' fall tournaments. Senior Jake Meenhorst and redshirt sophomore Chase Roswall round out the Big Orange's five-man lineup.
Redshirt freshman Bryce Lewis is also set to compete in Puerto Rico as an individual.
Sunday's first round of competition is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. ET., with round two on Monday and the tournament's final round taking place on Tuesday.
