Wolcott in top 10 following first round of play
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The No. 23 University of Tennessee men's golf team sits in 10th after the opening round of play at the 28th annual Puerto Rico Classic.
Through the first 18 holes of competition, the Vols totaled a team score of 290 (+2). Third place, occupied by No. 18 Georgia, and 10th place are separated by just five total strokes, with Tennessee also sitting just two strokes out of seventh place.
"We had a lot of good today, but when you count three double bogeys and a triple it's tough to beat anybody at this level," head coach Brennan Webb said. "We will try and get it cleaned up for tomorrow.
"The scores are very tightly bunched, so there is an opportunity to climb the leaderboard the next two days."
Redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott led the Vols during round one, finishing 2-under and tied for seventh place. Wolcott recorded four birdies on the day. The round marks Wolcott's seventh under par of the 2019-20 year.
With a crowded top of the leaderboard, Wolcott is just one stroke out of third place and two out of the lead.
"We have been working really hard all offseason so it feels great to get back to competing," Wolcott said. "I didn't have my best stuff early, but I kept pushing and sticking to what I could control and I turned it around to fire a solid opening round."
Just outside the top 25 for Tennessee was senior Rhys Nevin, who finished with an even par score. Nevin registered five birdies – four of which came in a span of five holes – to tie for 28th place on the day.
Like Wolcott, Nevin will have an opportunity to climb the leaderboard over the course of rounds two and three. The Cheshire, England, native is just two strokes outside the top 10.
One stroke back from Nevin, Chase Roswall gave Tennessee its third highest score of the day, shooting 1-over in what was just his third tournament of the 2019-20 season. Tied for 38th after the opening round, Roswall recorded an eagle an four birdies over the course of the day.
Redshirt junior Tyler Johnson gave the Vols their final counting score of the first round, shooting 3-over. Johnson is tied for 51st place. Two strokes back from Johnson is Jake Meenhorst. Competing for the first time since September, the senior is in 61st place entering round two.
